The Situation
A client became the target of a sophisticated cyberattack aimed at gaining access to their financial accounts. Rather than deploying ransomware, the attackers attempted to compromise credentials that could have provided access to the client's $300,000 home equity line of credit (HELOC).
The Risk
If the attackers had successfully accessed the account, the client could have faced the loss of substantial funds, along with the time, stress, and complexity involved in resolving financial fraud and identity theft.
Our Response
Cyber Intelligence Network's layered security platform detected suspicious activity and alerted our team before the attackers achieved their objective. We immediately investigated the activity, confirmed it was malicious, and took steps to contain the threat.
The attack did not stop after the first attempt. Over the following days, additional attempts were detected and blocked as the attackers continued trying different techniques to gain access.
Post-Incident Protection
Stopping the attack was only the first step. We worked with the client to strengthen their overall security posture by recommending several additional protective measures:
- Enroll in credit monitoring to detect signs of identity theft or unauthorized financial activity.
- Enable account alerts for bank withdrawals, wire transfers, and other significant transactions.
- Change passwords for financial accounts and other critical online services.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever available, especially for banking, email, and cloud accounts.
- Complete Security Awareness Training to recognize phishing attempts and social engineering tactics that often precede financial fraud.
The Outcome
The attempted fraud was stopped before the attackers could gain access to the client's financial accounts. Equally important, the additional safeguards reduced the likelihood that stolen information could be used in future attacks.
Lessons for Every Business
Modern cyberattacks rarely end after a single failed attempt. Criminals often return with new tactics, stolen credentials, or social engineering campaigns. Effective cybersecurity requires more than antivirus software—it requires continuous monitoring, rapid response, and a plan for strengthening security after an incident.
At Cyber Intelligence Network, we believe cybersecurity isn't just about blocking attacks. It's about helping clients recover safely, reduce future risk, and build long-term resilience.
